Hannah: I decided to interview Nikki because she is my friend and she rock climbs and I like rock climbing.

  1. Do you do any competitive rock climbing?

I just do it for fun. For me it’s for fitness and it’s like a physical puzzle, a way to relax.

  1. Do you like rock climbing?

Yes, I absolutely love it! It’s a good escape. The focus is on climbing.

  1. Do you go on any rock climbing trips?

I’ve climbed at the Red Rocks Canyon in Nevada and at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. At different places in the world the rocks are a bit different.

  1. Did it take long to build the climbing wall in your basement? (Nikki has a climbing wall in her basement)

It took us about a month, not full-time, about 30-40 hours at night and on weekends. The friend who introduced me to climbing helped build the climbing room.

Finn’s Questions:

  1. When did you start rock climbing?

I started rock climbing 5 years ago

  1. Where do you like to go rock climbing?

Locally there are some good climbing places in town (Owen Sound). Lion’s Head is my favourite.

  1. What kind of rock climbing is there?

Sport and Trad climbing are the two main types of climbing in this area.

Sport climbing: someone has hooked anchors into the rocks, you hook in as you go

Trad: you place your own gear as you go, the person who follows you up takes them out

  1. Did you rock climb today?

Not yet, but we’re going to do some today – bouldering (in the climbing room in the basement)

  1. Why did you start?

A couple of friends were going out on a beautiful day in spring.

  1. What equipment do you use?

The main pieces of equipment I use are a harness click, shoes, rope, and belay device (Nikki showed us some of her climbing equipment). The main thing with climbing is you want to be safe at all times. Always have your partner double and triple check your equipment, pay attention, and stay safe.

My name is Hannah Lauzon and I like to go rock climbing. I want to join a group that rock climbs, but I don’t know if there is one. I live in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada, with my brother, Finn, my mom, my dad, and my hundreds of pets. I’m 9 years old and my brother is 7, he wants to do this too, but it’s only  for girls.
