WHAT IS FAST AND FEMALE? Held at Silver Star Mountain Resort, in British Columbia, the first ever Fast and Female Ski Day for Girls attracted all of the participants it could handle and then some by a simple notice on the Cross Country Canada website. The event consisted of games and technique work with Canada’s National Women’s Team and an inspirational talk over hot chocolate with Sara Renner and Chandra Crawford. In February 2007, Fast and Female is again hit calendars nation- wide. Bigger and better than 2005, Fast and Female was a full day of skiing, yoga, and good eats, led by Canada’s National Team women. A big addition in 2007 was the selection of 12 girls from across Canada to attend the event with subsidized airfare and accommodation. This helped encourage regional leaders and spark the connections to become a nation-wide program in the future. Later in 2007 a Board of Directors was formed and Fast and Female officially became a registered not-for-profit corporation within the province of Alberta. As a strategic plan is formulated for the next five and ten years, watch for Fast and Female to grow into a international program incorporating many different sports, athletes, coaches and administrators, and clubs. Fast and Female is about more than a great time on cross-country skis; it’s about building confidence in young girls and women and showing them how much they have to gain from sport and a healthy, active lifestyle. Success in the short-term means getting more girls hooked on cross- country skiing. In the long term, the goal is to turn Fast and Female into a nation-wide wellness-through-sport program. The young girls who attend Fast and Female today will lead it in the future. CONTACT: |
